First Special Grade (FSG) Castor Oil
Manufactured by Nova Industries
Nova Industries manufactures First Special Grade (FSG) Castor Oil, the industry-standard high-quality refined oil.
FSG is a step above Commercial Grade oil in terms of purity and processing.1 It is produced by subjecting Commercial Grade oil to a rigorous bleaching and filtration process.2 This treatment removes color bodies, colloidal impurities, and moisture, resulting in a versatile oil that serves as the foundation for countless industrial, electrical, and cosmetic applications.
1. Technical Profile
FSG is defined by its balance of purity and cost-effectiveness. It bridges the gap between raw industrial oil and pharmaceutical-grade oil.
- Refined & Bleached: The bleaching process significantly reduces the Lovibond color, making it suitable for applications where the final product’s appearance is critical (e.g., clear resins, light-colored greases).
- Controlled Acidity: While not as low-acid as our “Extra Pale” or “Urethane” grades, FSG maintains a strictly controlled Acid Value (2.0 Max), ensuring consistent reactivity in polymerization and esterification processes.
2. Industrial Applications
FSG is the “Universal Solvent” of the castor world, finding use in highly diverse sectors.
Electrical & Defense (Sonar & Dielectrics)
- Transducer Fluid: Due to its density ($\approx$ 0.96) matching closely with seawater, FSG is used as a coupling fluid in SONAR domes and transducers for naval and marine exploration.
- Dielectric Fluid: Used in the impregnation of electrical condensers and high-voltage capacitors due to its high dielectric constant and thermal stability.3
Polymers & Resins
- Polyurethanes: Acts as a cost-effective natural polyol for PU casting resins, adhesives, and potting compounds.4
- Styrenated Oils: Reacts with styrene and diisocyanates to produce tough, durable polymers and varnish components for the coatings industry.
Pharmaceuticals & Personal Care
- Tablet Lubricant: Used as a lubricant in the coating of vitamin and mineral tablets to ensure smooth swallowing and moisture protection.5
- Cosmetic Formulations: Serves as a primary emollient and moisturizing agent in creams, lotions, and soaps.6
Chemical Synthesis
- Derivative Feedstock: It is the preferred raw material for manufacturing high-value derivatives such as Sebacic Acid, 12-HSA, and Undecylenic Acid when higher purity feedstock is required compared to Commercial Grade.
