Castor Oil Based Polyurethanes

Natural Oil Polyols (NOPs) supplied by Nova Industries

Nova Industries supplies the premier Natural Oil Polyol (NOP)—Castor Oil—for the global Polyurethane industry.

Castor Oil is the only commercially available vegetable oil that naturally contains hydroxyl groups (via Ricinoleic Acid) without requiring chemical modification. This unique “ready-to-react” structure makes it the ideal bio-renewable feedstock for reacting with diisocyanates to produce high-performance Polyurethanes (PU).

1. The Technical Advantage

Why choose Castor Oil over petrochemical polyols (like Polypropylene Glycol – PPG) or modified soy/linseed oils?

  • Natural Hydroxyl Functionality: Castor Oil has a hydroxyl value of ~160-168, allowing it to react directly with isocyanates to form urethane linkages. Other oils must be epoxidized or ozonized first, adding cost and complexity.
  • Hydrolysis Resistance: Castor-based PUs exhibit superior water and hydrolysis resistance compared to polyester-based PUs, making them ideal for underwater or humid environments.
  • Insulation Properties: They offer excellent electrical insulation and low dielectric constants, superior to standard PPG polyols.
  • Thermal Stability: The urethane structure derived from castor oil is exceptionally stable under high heat and humidity, solving a common failure point in PU flooring.

2. Key Applications

CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, Elastomers)

  • Coatings: Castor polyols create tough, high-gloss polyurethane coatings for industrial flooring and marine paints. They are essentially hydrophobic, preventing moisture damage.
  • Adhesives: utilized in solvent-free 2-component adhesives for flexible packaging and laminates (e.g., food packaging films).
  • Potting Compounds: Due to excellent electrical insulation and low exotherm during cure, Castor PU is the standard for potting electronics, transformers, and cable jointing kits.

Flexible & Rigid Foams

  • Automotive: Used to manufacture “Bio-Foams” for instrument panels, car seats, and headliners, reducing the vehicle’s carbon footprint (e.g., OEM sustainability initiatives).
  • Mattresses: Castor oil derivatives (often derivatized with propylene oxide) are used to produce Viscoelastic “Memory Foam” with reduced petroleum content.

Medical

  • Biocompatibility: Castor-based polyurethane resins are used in medical devices and bone cement due to their non-toxic, biocompatible nature and structural stability.

3. Typical Formulation Insight

Nova Industries supplies the core Polyol component. A typical bio-based PU formulation might look like this:

4. Nova Industries Polyurethane Feedstocks

We supply the specific grades required for different PU systems:

  • Castor Oil FSG/Commercial: The standard workhorse for rigid foams, potting compounds, and industrial flooring.
  • Castor Oil USP/Pale Pressed: Used in medical-grade PUs and clear optical adhesives where color is critical.
  • Ricinoleic Acid: Used to synthesize specialized polyamide-urethane copolymers.
  • Ethoxylated Castor Oil: Used as a surfactant and compatibilizer in PU foam systems.
