Castor Oil for Lubricants & Greases

Bio-Based Lubricity Solutions by Nova Industries

Nova Industries supplies the essential bio-based feedstocks that power the modern lubricant industry.

While petroleum oils dominate the volume market, Castor Oil and its derivatives are indispensable for high-performance applications. Known as the “Liquid Gold” of lubrication, Castor Oil is the only commercially available vegetable oil with a natural hydroxyl group, giving it unmatched polarity, viscosity, and adhesion to metal surfaces.

1. The Technical Edge

Why do formulators add Castor Oil derivatives to petroleum or synthetic bases?

  • Extreme Polarity: The hydroxyl group (-OH) on the ricinoleic chain makes the molecule highly polar.1 It acts like a “magnet,” bonding strongly to metal surfaces to create a tenacious lubricating film that resists wipe-off, even under high pressure.2
  • Natural Viscosity: It has the highest natural viscosity of any vegetable oil, providing excellent shear stability without the need for polymer thickeners.
  • Biodegradability: Castor derivatives are readily biodegradable, making them the base of choice for “Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants” (EALs) used in forestry, marine, and agriculture.3
  • Clean Burn: In two-stroke engines, it burns cleanly with minimal carbon deposits, which is why it remains a legend in racing applications.

2. Key Industrial Applications

Lubricating Greases (The 12-HSA Revolution)

  • The Industry Standard: Over 70% of the world’s greases are thickened with Lithium 12-Hydroxystearate.
  • Role of Nova: We supply 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid (12-HSA). When reacted with Lithium Hydroxide, it forms a microscopic fiber structure (soap) that holds the oil in place like a sponge.
  • Benefit: These greases offer a high dropping point ($>180^\circ C$), excellent water resistance, and mechanical stability, essential for automotive bearings and heavy machinery.

Metalworking Fluids (Cutting Oils)

  • Soluble Oils: Sulfonated Castor Oil (Turkey Red Oil) and Castor Esters are used in emulsifiable cutting fluids. They provide “oiliness” and lubricity to reduce friction between the cutting tool and the workpiece.
  • Deep Drawing: High-viscosity Castor Oil is used in metal drawing and stamping operations to prevent tearing and extend die life.

Synthetic Lubricants (Esters)

  • Aviation & Turbines: Sebacic Acid (derived from Castor) is the precursor for Dioctyl Sebacate (DOS), a synthetic ester used in jet turbine oils and low-temperature hydraulic fluids due to its exceptional thermal stability.
  • Bio-Hydraulics: Castor esters are used to formulate fire-resistant and biodegradable hydraulic fluids for eco-sensitive zones.

Racing & Aviation

  • 2-Stroke Engines: Castor Oil is still used in high-performance racing karts and model airplane engines. Unlike mineral oils, it does not dissolve in methanol fuel and maintains lubrication at peak temperatures where other oils vaporize.
