Castor Oil C-18 Derivatives
Manufactured by Nova Industries
Nova Industries offers a comprehensive portfolio of C-18 Derivatives, the backbone of the industrial grease, polymer, and personal care industries.
Unlike the cleavage products (C-7 and C-11), these derivatives maintain the full carbon chain length. Through processes like Hydrogenation, Esterification, and Saponification, we modify the functional groups to create high-performance additives for lubrication and odor control.
1. 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid (12-HSA)
The Grease Thickener Standard
12-HSA is a saturated C-18 fatty acid produced by the catalytic Hydrogenation of Ricinoleic Acid. This process saturates the double bond, resulting in a high-melting-point solid that serves as the premier thickener for Lithium-based greases.
- Grease Manufacture: When reacted with Lithium Hydroxide, it forms Lithium 12-Hydroxystearate, the soap base for over 70% of the world’s lubricating greases. It imparts superior shear stability, water resistance, and high dropping points to the final grease.
- Cosmetics: Acts as a gelling agent for liquid petroleum and oils in stick formulations (deodorants, lipsticks).
- Plastics: Used as an internal lubricant and mold release agent in PVC processing.
Specifications (Flakes/Powder):
- Acid Value: 175 – 185 mg KOH/g
- Melting Point: 73°C – 77°C
- Iodine Value: 5.0 Max (Indicates full saturation)
- Color (Gardner): 2 Max
2. Methyl 12-Hydroxy Stearate (Methyl 12-HSA)
The Liquid Handling Solution
Methyl 12-HSA is the methyl ester of 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid. It is produced by the direct esterification of 12-HSA with methanol. While chemically similar to the acid, the ester form has a significantly lower melting point (~50°C), allowing it to be handled as a liquid in heated lines, simplifying continuous processing.
- Pigment Dispersant: Excellent wetting agent for solid pigments in color concentrates (Masterbatches) for plastics and inks.
- Continuous Grease Production: Used as a feedstock in continuous grease manufacturing processes where liquid feeds are required.
- Rubber Processing: Functions as a flow promoter and processing aid for complex rubber compounds.
Specifications:
- Acid Value: 5.0 mg KOH/g Max
- Melting Point: 48°C – 53°C (Often supplied molten)
- Hydroxyl Value: 155 – 165
3. Methyl Ricinoleate
The Versatile Plasticizer
Methyl Ricinoleate is the methyl ester of Ricinoleic Acid, produced via the Transesterification of Castor Oil. It retains the unsaturation (double bond) and hydroxyl group of the parent oil but with much lower viscosity.
- Plasticizer: A highly effective low-temperature plasticizer for rubber and polymers, imparting flexibility without leeching.
- Fuel Additive: Used as a lubricity improver in ultra-low sulfur diesel and bio-fuels, enhancing engine life.
- Chemical Intermediate: The primary feedstock for the pyrolysis process to produce C-11 (Undecylenic) and C-7 (Heptaldehyde) chemicals.
Specifications:
- Appearance: Clear, Yellow Liquid
- Acid Value: 2.0 Max
- Viscosity: Low (compared to Castor Oil)
4. Zinc Ricinoleate
The Odor Neutralizer
Zinc Ricinoleate is the zinc salt of Ricinoleic Acid. Unlike masking agents that merely cover up smells, Zinc Ricinoleate chemically traps odor molecules.
- Mechanism: It acts as a “cage,” chemically binding nucleophilic odor molecules (such as isovaleric acid from sweat, amines, and mercaptans) irreversibly. Once bound, the odor is no longer volatile and cannot be smelled.
- Deodorants: The active ingredient in aluminum-free and natural deodorants.
- Industrial: Used in household cleaners, pet care products, and waste management to neutralize environmental malodors.
Specifications:
- Form: Waxy Pastilles or Granules
- Zinc Content: ~10%
- Melting Point: 70°C – 80°C
Packaging & Supply
