1. Technical Profile
FSG is defined by its balance of purity and cost-effectiveness.
- Refining: Unlike crude commercial oil, FSG undergoes degumming and bleaching to remove phospholipids, colloidal impurities, and excess color.2
- Purity: It retains the essential hydroxyl functionality (~160-168 Hydroxyl Value) and high viscosity of the ricinoleic chain but with reduced acidity (Free Fatty Acid < 1.0%), making it stable for chemical reactions.3
2. Key Industrial Applications
Chemical Synthesis (Derivatives)
- Feedstock: It is the starting material for producing 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid (12-HSA), Sebacic Acid, and Hydrogenated Castor Oil (HCO).4 Its low impurity profile ensures high yields during hydrogenation and pyrolysis.
Lubricants & Greases
- Grease Manufacturing: The preferred grade for manufacturing Lithium and Calcium-based greases. Its consistent saponification value ensures predictable soap formation.
- Surface Coatings: Used as a plasticizer and flow promoter in alkyd resins and industrial paints.5
Polyurethanes & Urethanes
- Bio-Polyols: Used directly as a Natural Oil Polyol (NOP) in the production of polyurethane foams, casting resins, and adhesives due to its natural hydroxyl groups.6
