Glycerin (Refined Glycerol)
C-3 Derivative | Manufactured by Nova Industries
Nova Industries supplies high-purity Refined Glycerin (Glycerol), a versatile C-3 alcohol derived from the transesterification and hydrolysis of Castor Oil.
As a critical co-product generated during the manufacturing of Methyl Ricinoleate and Castor Fatty Acids, our Glycerin is a 100% vegetable-based, biodegradable resource. Through advanced distillation and refining, we purify the crude glycerol into a pharmaceutical-grade, water-white viscous liquid that serves as a humectant, solvent, and chemical intermediate across the globe.
1. Production & Chemistry
Glycerin (1$C_3H_8O_3$) constitutes the “backbone” of the Castor Oil triglyceride molecule.2
- Source: It is liberated when the Castor Oil molecule is split (hydrolysis) or reacted with methanol (transesterification). For every 10 metric tons of oil processed, approximately 1 metric ton of Glycerin is generated.
- Refining: Our crude glycerin undergoes distillation, bleaching, and deodorization to remove organic impurities, salts, and methanol residues, achieving a purity of 99.5% Min.
- Properties: It is odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting, and highly hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air), making it the premier “Humectant” for industry.3
2. Key Industrial Applications
Pharmaceuticals & Personal Care (USP/BP Grade)
- Humectant: Prevents drying out in toothpastes, skin creams, and lotions.4 It draws moisture into the skin (emollient).5
- Solvent & Vehicle: Acts as a bodying agent and solvent in cough syrups (elixirs), anesthetics, and ear infection remedies.6
- Plasticizer: Used in the manufacturing of soft gelatin capsules to maintain flexibility.7
Surface Coatings & Resins
- Alkyd Resins: Glycerin is a primary polyol reacted with phthalic anhydride or maleic anhydride to produce Alkyd Resins, widely used in paints and industrial surface coatings.8
- Polyurethanes: Serves as the initiator for polyether polyols used in flexible urethane foams.9
Food & Tobacco
- Additive (E422): Used as a solvent for flavors, a sweetener, and a preservative.10
- Tobacco Processing: Sprayed onto tobacco leaves to maintain moisture, prevent crumbling, and ensure freshness in cigarettes.
Industrial & Technical
- Nitration: The precursor for Nitroglycerin, used in explosives (dynamite) and as a vasodilator in cardiovascular medication.11
- Lubricants: Used in food-grade lubricants and textile sizing (lubricating yarn fibers) due to its non-toxic nature.
- Anti-Freeze: Used in specialized automotive and hydraulic fluids.12
