Methyl 12-Hydroxy Stearic Acid (Methyl 12-HSA)

Manufactured by Nova Industries

Nova Industries manufactures high-purity Methyl 12-Hydroxystearate (Methyl 12-HSA), the methyl ester derivative of 12-Hydroxystearic Acid.

While standard 12-HSA is supplied as solid flakes, Methyl 12-HSA is a low-melting-point waxy solid (often handled in liquid state). This unique physical property makes it the preferred feedstock for modern Continuous Grease Manufacturing plants, where pumpability and rapid reaction kinetics are essential.

1. Chemical Profile & Processing Advantages

Methyl 12-HSA is produced via the esterification of 12-HSA with methanol (or transesterification of Hydrogenated Castor Oil).1

The “Liquid” Advantage

The defining characteristic of Methyl 12-HSA is its melting point (2$\approx$ 48°C – 52°C), which is significantly lower than standard 12-HSA (3$\approx$ 75°C).4

  • Process Efficiency: In continuous soap-making units, Methyl 12-HSA melts rapidly and disperses more uniformly into the base oil than solid acid flakes.
  • Energy Savings: Requires lower temperatures to maintain a liquid state during dosing.
  • Reaction Control: The ester hydrolysis releases methanol (which is recovered), allowing for precise control over the saponification rate in lithium complex grease production.5

2. Industrial Applications

1. Lubricants: Continuous Grease Processing

This is the primary application for Methyl 12-HSA. It allows manufacturers to produce high-performance Lithium and Lithium Complex greases with superior consistency.

  • Higher Drop Points: Facilitates the formation of complex soap structures that remain stable at high temperatures.6
  • Mechanical Stability: Greases formulated with Methyl 12-HSA exhibit reduced “bleeding” (oil separation) and improved oxidative stability compared to standard formulations.
  • Operational Benefit: Eliminates the need for milling and homogenizing solid flakes, reducing shear stress during the manufacturing phase.

2. Plastics & Polymer Processing

  • Internal Lubricant: Functions as a processing aid in rubber and plastic extrusion, reducing friction between polymer chains and lowering energy consumption.7
  • Mold Release: Acts as an effective external release agent in injection molding and calendaring operations.

3. Inks & Coatings

  • Dispersant: Acts as a solid pigment dispersant for color concentrates (masterbatches), ensuring vivid and streak-free coloration in plastics and inks.
  • Rheology Modifier: Used in solvent-based coatings to control flow and settling.

4. Adhesives & Textiles

  • Plasticizer: Serves as a coupling agent and plasticizer in hot-melt adhesives.8
  • Textile Auxiliary: Used in printing compounds to improve fabric wetting and dye penetration.9

3. Technical Specifications (TDS)

Nova Industries guarantees a low acid value and consistent melting range for optimal reactor performance.

Packaging & Handling

  • Packaging: 190 Kg Steel Drums / ISO Tanks (Heated).
  • Storage: Due to its low melting point, it should be stored in a cool area.10 In colder climates, drum heating may be required to facilitate pouring.
