Methyl Undecylenate
Manufactured by Nova Industries
Nova Industries manufactures high-purity Methyl Undecylenate (Methyl 10-Undecenoate), an unsaturated ester derived from the thermal cracking of Methyl Ricinoleate.
This C-12 ester serves as a vital bridge between industrial chemistry and fine fragrance. Due to its superior fractional distillation, our grade offers a cleaner odor profile suitable for perfumery, while maintaining the chemical reactivity required for pharmaceutical and polymer synthesis.
1. Production Process
Methyl Undecylenate is produced via the high-temperature pyrolysis of Methyl Ricinoleate (the methyl ester of Castor Oil).
- The Process: Methyl Ricinoleate is heated to $>500^\circ C$, causing the molecule to cleave.
- The Equation:$$Methyl \ Ricinoleate \xrightarrow{\Delta} Heptaldehyde \ (C_7) + Methyl \ Undecylenate \ (C_{11} \ Ester)$$
- Purification: The reaction mixture yields Heptaldehyde and Methyl Undecylenate, which are separated and purified via Fractional Distillation to achieve purities exceeding 98%.
2. Key Industrial Applications
Fragrance & Flavors
- Odor Profile: A medium-strength odor described as “Earthy, Fatty, Rose, Floral” with fungal nuances.
- Perfumery: Used as a modifier in floral accords (Rose, Geranium) to add a natural “waxy petal” effect. Its substantivity (24 hours) makes it a useful fixative for top-to-middle notes.
- Masking Agent: Effective in anti-odor formulations for covering chemical base notes.
Chemical Synthesis
- Precursor: It is the primary intermediate for the production of Undecylenic Acid via hydrolysis. Hydrolyzing the ester yields a purer acid than direct oil pyrolysis.
- Nylon-11: A feedstock for synthesizing 11-Aminoundecanoic acid, the monomer for Nylon-11 engineering plastics.
Cosmetics & Pharma
- Antifungal: Like its acid form, the methyl ester exhibits antifungal properties and is used in foot care formulations and deodorants.
