Refined Glycerine (Glycerol)
Supplied by Nova Industries
Nova Industries supplies high-purity Refined Glycerine, a trivalent alcohol derived from the hydrolysis of vegetable oils (Castor Oil).
While widely known as a humectant in cosmetics, Glycerine is a critical chemical intermediate in heavy industry. Its unique combination of properties—high viscosity, hygroscopicity, non-toxicity, and three reactive hydroxyl groups—makes it indispensable for polymer synthesis and specialized lubrication.
Industrial Applications
1. Polyurethanes (PU Foam)
Glycerine serves as a fundamental Initiator in the chemical manufacturing of polyether polyols.
- Flexible Foams: It reacts with propylene oxide/ethylene oxide to form the polyols used in flexible polyurethane foams (automotive seating, furniture, bedding).
- Rigid Foams: Used as a cross-linker to improve the structural integrity of rigid insulation foams.
2. Plasticizers (Polyvinyl Butyral – PVB)
- Safety Glass: Glycerine is chemically modified (esterified) to produce plasticizers for Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) resin. PVB is the tough, transparent interlayer used in laminated automotive safety glass and architectural glass.
- Function: It imparts essential flexibility and impact resistance to the glass, preventing it from shattering into dangerous shards upon impact.
3. Explosives & Nitration
- Nitroglycerin: Glycerine is the direct precursor for the manufacture of Nitroglycerin via nitration.
- Dynamite & Propellants: Used in the production of dynamite and double-base propellants (smokeless powders) for the defense and mining industries.
4. Specialized Lubricants
- Refrigeration: Used in the formulation of lubricants for refrigeration compressors due to its low freezing point (when mixed with water) and compatibility with seals.
- Aviation & Hydraulics: Historically used in early aviation anti-freeze and hydraulic fluids. Today, synthetic esters derived from glycerine are used in high-performance jet engine lubricants due to their thermal stability.
5. Food & Personal Care
- Moisturizer: The industry-standard humectant for soaps, lotions, and toothpastes.
- Preservative: Acts as a bacteriostatic agent and non-sugar sweetener in food processing.
